Recently, I just want to update the android system of my old Vodafone 845, unfortunately, there is no official update rom released, I have tried custom android 4.x rom, however, those roms run slow on Vodafone 845 and very buggy, finally I updated my phone to an unofficial rom of android 2.3.7 and am happy that it runs smoothly and quite stable. Here's how to root your Vodafone 845, install custom recovery and custom rom in case you want to update your phone as well.

Remember that doing this on your own risk, as the warranty of your device will void, properly your device is out of warranty already and I hold no responsibility if you bricked your device and the FM Radio is not working on this custom rom.

First of all, BACKUP YOUR DATA, your photos, contacts, videos and any other import data in your phone to your computer.

Once you have your data backup, then follow the procedures below, please read through the procedures below to get an idea of what you are going to do before you begin if you are new to this. Although you can finish the procedures below without a microSD card reader, but a microSD card reader is still recommended, make sure your phone is fully charged.

Install USB adb driver of your Vodafone 845.

If you have connected your phone to your computer before, the driver is properly installed, otherwise, download the Vodafone 845 USB driver, extract the USB driver to a directory of your choice, connect your phone to computer, when prompt to install the driver, select the driver to install as usual.

Root your Vodafone 845 (Huawei U8120).

  • Turn on debugging mode of your device, Settings > Applications > Development > Android debugging.
  • Download Superboot and extract the zip file to a directory of your choice.
  • Connect your phone to computer through USB cable.
  • Enter recovery mode by turning your device on while holding down "Volume Down" button and "End call" button then press the "Power" button to power on your device, the hourglass stays on the screen.
  • On your computer WINDOWS - go to the directory of Superboot and double click "superboot-windows.bat".
  • Wait and your phone will eventually reboot.

Install ClockWorkMod Recovery.

  • Download ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.0.2.7 and extract to a directory of your choice.
  • Connect your phone to computer through USB cable.
  • Enter recovery mode by turning your device on while holding down "Volume Down" button and "End call" button then press the "Power" button to power on your device, the hourglass stays on the screen.
  • On your computer WINDOWS - go to the directory of ClockWordMod Recovery and double click "install-recovery-windows.bat".
  • Wait while flashing the recovery image.
  • When flashing finished, remove battery and wait around 10 seconds, reinsert the battery and power on the phone.

Install Custom Rom (Android 2.3.7 - Cyanogen Mod 7.2.0 RC2 Update 30).

  • Download the Custom Rom.
  • Copy the zip file of Custom Rom to SD Card
  • Extract the Custom Rom zip file from SD Card to your computer, this is just to make sure the copied zip file is good to be extracted.
  • Boot into ClockWordMod Recovery by turning your device on while holding down "Volume Up" button and "Start call" button then press the "Power" button to power on your device.
  • On ClockWorkMod recovery, do a full wipe (wipe data/factory reset, mounts and storage > format /system, advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache).
  • On ClockWorkMod recovery, mount & storage > mount /data, mount /system.
  • On ClockWorkMod recovery, install the custom rom (install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard then select the Custom Rom file you downloaded).
  • Wait while flashing the rom, this may take a few minutes to finish, then fix permissions.
  • On ClockWorkMod recovery, advanced > Partition SD Card (Optional), see Final optimization below.
  • Reboot your device, the first reboot can be long, just wait.

Install Google apps.

  • Download Google apps.
  • Copy the zip file of Google apps to SD Card.
  • Boot into ClockWordMod Recovery by turning your device on while holding down "Volume Up" button and "Start call" button then press the "Power" button to power on your device.
  • On ClockWorkMod recovery, install the Google apps (install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard then select the Google apps file you downloaded).
  • Wait while flashing.
  • Reboot your device when finished.

Done, your Vodafone 845 is now rooted, installed the ClockWorkMod Recovery and updated to Custom Android 2.3.7 rom.

Final optimization:

Partition SD Card.

As the ClockWorkMod Recovery is able to partition the SD card and Android 2.3.7 supports moving apps to SD card, so you may want to repartition the SD card to create a partition to store apps, repartition will destroy all data on SD card, you may do it after flashed the custom rom, on ClockWorkMod recovery, advanced > Partition SD Card, choose a size for ext partition, 512MB should be enough, but if you have a large capacity SD Card, you may assign 1024MB or 2048MB for the ext partition, then choose a size for swap partition, properly 32MB or 64MB, some people say that using SD card swap partition is slow, however, I can say that the memory of Vodafone 845 is too less, so I still recommended to have a swap partition, I have assigned 128MB for the swap partition, wait the partitioning to be completed, reboot your device.

Overclock the CPU.

On Android 2.3.7, press the MENU button of the phone > Settings > CyanogenMod settings > Performance > CPU settings, change the Max CPU frequency to 710Mhz or lower and check the box of Set on boot, of course higher speed run faster, however, it become unstable for higher frequency.

Enable swap partition as virtual memory.

On Android 2.3.7, press the MENU button of the phone > Settings > Device settings, check the box of Swap to use the swap partition as virtual memory.

Move apps to SD Card.

The internal memory storage will be filled out fast if you install a few apps, you may want to move the apps to SD Card to free more internal memory, you can do this by press the MENU button of the phone > Settings > Applications > Manage applications, tap SD card tab, any apps are natively support moving to SD Card list here, you can move apps from phone to SD or from SD to phone, furthermore, you can install an app called Link2SD 2.4.4, which can move apps to SD card, even the apps are not natively support.

Don't run Rom Manager or disable it.

The custom rom come with an app called Rom Manager, which is for managing rom and update ClockWorkMod Recovery, however, it is properly cannot find the proper update ClockWorkMod for Vodafone 845, so don't run it, anyway, you just don't need it. You can find some Apps Manager with root access from Google store to disable the Rom Manager.

If you just want to root the Vodafone 845, you can simply install the USB driver and superboot, that's all, the remaining procedures are for upgrading the ROM.

Or you may download something like SuperOneClick or z4root, however, I haven't try that so you still need to read their instructions.

Hi Wasim,

It's hard to said about the force close problem, maybe the apps are not compatible to the device. For the apps listed here and some other apps, if the apps are not responding, I just click Wait to wait a bit and the apps will keep running.

It's always better to contact the apps developers about the problem.

Did you do a full wipe as mentioned on Install Custom Rom section?

If you encounter too many problems, maybe try to full wipe the settings and re-flash the custom rom again.

You can access the status bar by the ADWLauncher - Gestures - Swipe Down action.

The Wifi fixer is just try to recover the connection, it cannot prevent disconnections or boost signals.

Hi Matje, I am really not sure of what's the problem you have encountered. Please make sure that the sim card is inserted properly. And if this doesn't help, please try again to follow this guide and DO a FULL WIPE as this guide mentioned

 Brilliant! Thanks for the tutorial. Worked a treat. There's others out there on the internet, but they only give you half the instructions and assume you have this or that already installed. I used yours because it's by far the best and easiest to understand!!!!
